I will be taking part in a charity event for TOMMYS the baby charity on Sunday 23 November, 12.30 - 4.30 at I originally studied Graphic Design at Cardonald College, Glasgow and graduated with and Higher National Diploma - Graphic Design for Print and New Media in August 2003. Having worked in the vinyl graphics industry for several years, I decided to change direction and set-up as a designer maker of handcrafted candles in Febuary 2004. I opened my first studio in Largs and after one year I relocated to West Kilbride to join the Craft Town Initiative. I have now left West Kilbride, but I am still creating candles and selling through the internet and through a few select gift shops. I learned the basics of candlemaking through craft books, researching the internet and using candle starter kits. I wanted to create candles that were unusual and that hadn't been seen before so I raided the family toolbox and found a packet of carving tools, after hours of experimenting I discovered a few techniques which are still used today in my work. As time has passed I have built up my collection of moulds and colours available. I use Polycarbonate Moulds, Aluminium Moulds and 2 piece plastic moulds, these are imported from USA and Germany. Some finishing techniques take a considerable time longer to create than others this is reflected in the prices. All of my candles are decorative yet functional, they are made with the intention that they will be burned therefor different wick sizes are used to correspond with the diametre of the candle for maximised burning.
